đź“Ł New integration with Jira Plan (ex Advanced Roadmaps) is now available!

Update: this feature is generally available for all customers, unless you are on bundled/release tracks. If that's the case, then you will have access as of 14th Jan.

Many of you have asked how to effectively use Jpd official Jira Product Discovery (JPD) with your plans in Jira Jira. We are excited to announce that we have launched an integration that brings these two tools closer together.

Plans are available with Jira Premium or Enterprise subscriptions. This advanced planning tool provides an overview of work from multiple projects, boards, teams and filters. See work across your entire organisation, with an extended work hierarchy.

How it works

We are pleased to introduce a new field within a Plan called “Idea”.  This field displays the JPD idea linked to a Jira issue. You can use this field to filter and group issues, and the data is included in plan exports for your convenience.

Here’s a brief overview of the integration:

  • When you're ready to start the delivery for an idea, you’ll connect your idea to Delivery tickets in Jira in the idea delivery panel.

Screenshot 2024-10-18 at 5.07.26 PM.png

  • You can also track delivery progress from within Jira Product Discovery and get a bird’s eye view of progress across all product initiatives and teams.

Screenshot 2024-10-18 at 1.45.42 PM.png

Go to the plan, select ( + ) in the navigation and find the idea field.

  • Ideas as a field in a plan: To add an idea field to your plan, go to the plan, select ( + ) in the plan navigation, and find the idea field.

Screenshot 2024-10-07 at 14.13.18 (1).png

  • Group initiatives by idea to keep the issue and idea dates in sync.

    • In your plan, go to View settings > Group by > Idea.

image-20241018-143209.png

  • Filter Ideas: Click on 'Filter' to access and choose the ideas you wish to view along with their associated issues.

Screenshot 2024-10-02 at 10.54.13.png

  • Hover over an idea to view its preview details. Currently, you can only see the idea key. We are actively working to enhance this, and soon, you will be able to see the complete idea card.

Link and commit ideas from within Plan

  • Ensure you’ve added the ideas field to your plan by going to the plan, selecting + in the nav bar, and finding the idea field.

  • Find the issue you want to attach an idea to and click the idea column.

  • Find the idea you want to attach and hit Enter.

This Idea field will also be visible when you choose to share plans through:

  • CSV export,

  • PNG export,

Support for the following will be available from 14th November:

  • embed, and

  • Confluence

How are Roadmaps different from Jira Plan?

c9aac3c6-df84-4292-9b5c-c4cf065b5220.png

Roadmaps are created in the product backlog in Jira Product Discovery. They communicate how and why each idea was prioritized. They’re easily shared with customers, partners, and everyone within your company.

Plans are part of Jira, where you can plan, track, and report on the execution and delivery of your ideas.

Timeline view in JPD

You can visualize ideas on a roadmap using the timeline view in JPD. However, the JPD team prefers the Now/Next/Later format, as it fosters more productive conversations with stakeholders. The question of "when is X going to ship?" is often less useful. Nonetheless, we recognize that every company has unique needs, and for some, a timeline view is essential. You can use the two in combination:

timeline-view-now-next-later.png

We recommend utilizing a timeline view with a high level of granularity: focus on the significant ideas without getting too detailed. The goal is to communicate a high-level roadmap to stakeholders without delving into the minutiae of tasks and subtasks.

Dates can easily change based on what you learn in delivery. For this reason in this view you can configure the idea’s date fields to be automatically overridden by the epic/initiative’s date fields once the idea has corresponding delivery tickets.

This way, any changes that happen on an epic during work, will be immediately reflected back on the roadmap:

JPD Ideas in Jira Plan Demo

Here's a demo that shows how to use Jira (Plans) and Jira Product Discovery together

The new integration has been successfully launched for all JPD and Jira Premium and Enterprise customers.

https://www.loom.com/share/1f64b8ad9489409e9e77662782fb0486

Known limitations:

  • A Jira plan can support up to 1,000 Ideas, with no exceptions.

  • In the "Group by Idea" feature, the Idea header may appear empty if the data is inaccessible.

  • The "Group by Idea" groups are not sorted alphabetically.

  • If there are ideas in the plan, we actively filter out self-references in the Select. We do the same in the JPD UI.

  • If JPD is deactivated, no idea data will be visible.

  • The idea preview on hover currently displays only the issue key and summary, without additional fields.

We are eager to hear your feedback!

Thanks,
Jet - Product Manager, Jira Product Discovery

Hi @Jet

Thanks for this cool update.

It's very clear to show the relationships of delivery epcis (in Jira) and discovery ideas (in JPD) through Plan.

I have a question about the Goal. Both epics and ideas can be related to Goals. Should we make the epic's goal inherited from the goal of the related idea?

BTW, the Jira UI screens in this artical are not unified (some are old, but some are new). It would be better if we can use a unified UI.

Thanks,
YY Bro

Hi @Jet

Thanks for this awesome guide! I am trying to add the idea field to my plan, but it does not appear when I am trying to add it. Is there some prerequisite setup that has to be in place before I can add the idea field?

Pls. see screenshot below. When I type ind 'idea' in the field chooser, nothing matches.

Apologies @Carolyn Reeves - there was an issue with public sharing which has been resolved. The video talks about how to use Jira & JPD together, including using the new integration with Jira Plans

Thanks for sharing this wonderful information but I'm not able to see Idea in my Plan when I try to add that as in field.

Should I raise this will support?

@Manish Arya @Kim Ranch Olsen looks like you are both experiencing the same problem.

Did you connect Jira Product Discovery to the Jira project where you have your Plans?

In your JPD project, can you please click the delivery panel > Create delivery ticket to check which Jira Project it's connected to? Is that the same as where you have your Plans?

@Jet - Yes, Idea is connected with delivery ticket and that is available in plan. But plan is having more tickets for which idea is not there, can that be issue?

@Manish Arya I would like to investigate this to understand what is happening and why. Do you mind submitting a feedback ticket through the "give feedback" option in your Jira Product Discovery Project?Screenshot 2024-12-11 at 12.09.42 PM.png

Hi @Jet  - same for me. I can create tickets in the project contained in the plan from JPD, but cannot see the Idea level, which I expect would be a hierarchy level above the epic-level in the hierarchy.

JPD_createTicket.png

In this question, I have described what I have done so far. I hope this can help you to guide me to the setup that I am missing to see Ideas in Plans :)

@Kim Ranch Olsen @Manish Arya

It could be because you are on release tracks/bundled releases. If that's the case, then you should get it in January or I can give access manually.

Can you please share your domain name so that I can find out if that's the case?

Thanks!

Thanks @Jet I'm able to see the idea now in my plan but how can I open this idea in JPD? I want to know the idea key which is missing in plan. Key is visible for respective hierarchy of JIRA issues in plan but not for Idea.

Hi @Manish Arya that's because you are grouping your plan by idea. You need to add a new field to show the idea in your plan, which then shows the key on hover. Here's how a quick demo

Hi, we are unable to see the idea field in plans to make it on the timeline. Should this be available for all users now?
