Mandatory Field

We have a custom field which comes in to the popup screen in the middle of the workflow. How can we make it mandatory ? when we make it mandatory using field config, in the issue create screen it gives an error ? is there any workaround for this ?

Use a workflow validator to check that the field is populated.  They stop the transition if validation fails, and put the user back on the transition screen if there is one.

Yes.  Add a validator to the workflow.

JIRA ships with several, but most of us install the JIRA Suite utilities to get some more useful ones.
