Reoccurring Task

Edited

Does Jira Cloud have a setting for Reoccurring task. There are task that are continually done across sprints. I want to know if Jira can auto generate the same task after being closed in a a sprint.

Hi @Carlyle Brown

In Automation, there is a trigger for Completed Sprint. From there, if you have an identifiable data point in the recurring task, it would be fairly easy to condition and then create an action to create a new task.sprint.jpg

And I have to respectfully disagree with Allister. While that paid plugin can accomplish it, unless you need to do this on a large scale across many teams and projects, you don't need to pay extra money to do something the system can already do out of the box.

you can use automation to auto create tasks based on a trigger.

Take a look at the automation playground and look at the automation guides

Hi @Carlyle Brown

I have just done that in a project by using Automation and the schedule trigger as mentioned above. No need for a marketplace app.

Hi @Carlyle Brown

You could achieve this be creating an automation rule on the project this action is required

The trigger of the rule would be based upon the completion of a Sprint, there you would need to specify your sprint board

The following action would be to create an issue and specify the default information that that issue would need on creation after a sprint is closed.

By default you will have the fields Summary and Description, but you can set more fields by adding them via the "Choose fields to set..." selection.

I hope this explanation will help you forward.

Cheers

Thank you guys, this help was great. I was able to successfully set triggers for task that are reoccurring. Was actually not too difficult

We used Scriptrunner for a more complex requirement of reoccurring tasks. But for an simple issue that is newly created after closing each sprint is the automation perfect. No need for a marketplace app.

Hello @Carlyle Brown we use "The scheduler" it is a well formed add-on and works really well. https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/37456/the-scheduler?hosting=cloud&tab=overview

We use this one as well, it's been very useful for all types of teams, and can be set up by virtually anyone regardless on their admin permissions or script capabilities.

In Project Settings --> Automation check below option. Not sure if this helps or try achieving issue creation with option when Sprint closed

As everyone else has mentioned, Automation is the way you can do this.  Various triggers including conditions.

Ex.  I manage properties for weekend home owners in my area.  They have me check their house at least once a week.  I use Jira Service Management to record my tasks.  I'll go through the house and when I resolve my ticket, I use a custom field "Next Visit Date", which after close of this issue, it auto-creates a new task with a due date of that next visit date that I set.  I've also used it for other clients, where I use a custom field called "Return in How Many Days", where automation then creates a new issue based on that and sets the due date from X number of days from closure of the current issue.

Automation allows you to do lots of different things and very flexible and powerful.

Hi @Carlyle Brown we use Business Process Manager, developed by my team. Here we have a process template with all recurring tasks for the marketing team. We set up a schedule that starts a process every Monday and Jira Automation that adds these issues to the current sprint.

Here is an online demo of Business Process Manager.

Hope it helps.

Hi, @Carlyle Brown !

To always carry out repetitive tasks try out the Recurring Checklists and Report plug-in. You can easily convert tasks into ToDo list and control the team performance in a one-page detailed report.

Our team uses this app for the usual tasks that needs to be done every day/week/month. It helps to control the workload of managers but, at the same time, have an understandable working routine.

Use add-on with all functions free for 30 days

For any people who come here looking for an answer to this question, you can also use an app prepared by our team of HeroCoders - Issue Checklist for Jira. Free and its checklist templates to manage recurring tasks with a convenient checklist formula.
You would need an automation to create a cloned issue when the previous one is completed, and assign a checklist template to the issues of its type - this way all issues of a given type in your project will always have the specified checklist present - convenient for quality control, tests and other uses. You can check out our  and reach out to our support team for help here.
