Hi, Carlyle. Can you specify which deployment type you refer to (Cloud or Server) and which type of project you have (company-managed or team-managed)?

Jira Cloud

Hi @Carlyle Brown ,

I believe this is what you are looking for - https://support.atlassian.com/jira-software-cloud/docs/use-parallel-sprints/ .
At least this is the only option for two sprints that I can think of

Yes. From the backlog screen you will just need to click "Start Sprint" if you have another sprint created, if not, scroll down until you are at the "backlog" issues and click "Create Sprint" and then you will need to click "Start Sprint". In the Active sprints view, they both will show and you can select the various sprints in progress by selecting "All Sprints" above the cards and select the sprint you would like to view the issues for.

Hi @Carlyle Brown ,

Yes we can have multiple sprints in a JIRA board (SCRUM or KANBAN) .. You can create a board with a filter showing data from multiple sprints :

EG

project=SSP and sprint in ('Sample Sprint 6' , 'Sample Sprint 7') order by created DESC

or

project = SSP AND sprint in openSprints() ORDER BY created DESC

However,

if you want to run multiple sprints simultaneously in a project, you can enable parallel sprints ( as advised by @Asparuh Georgiev ). This will showcase multiple scripts in the active sprints board and you can also filter by sprints. It allows for multiple sprints ( move than two )

Aside:  Kanban does not have sprints.

@Johnny FromCanada : Absolutely. Thanks for calling that out.

However, we can go on a create a Kanban board for issues in sprints.. in cases where we use a Hybrid mode or need some teams need to use Kanban boards

Indeed, for classic / company boards, you can definitely have heterogenous set of boards associated with projects, many-to-many.

We don't use parallel sprints (because our cross functional teams have their own projects and boards), but you could use this approach with or without parallel sprints.

I set up Kanban and Scrum boards for all of our client-facing development projects.

PMs and POs mainly use the Project level Kanban Board, while our dev teams use the Scrum board to stay focused on the Active Sprint.

In the board settings for the Kanban board, I add the Sprint field to the Card Layout so the PM/PO side of each project has a bird's eye view of the project as a whole.

Yes. You need to ensure your Jira Admins have enabled "Parallel Sprints" in Jira settings.

@Carlyle Brown

Yes, Jira Admins can setup "Parallel Sprints" option to allow users to have the ability of multiple active sprints in the SCRUM board.

However, be aware of the following areas limitation -

In CLOUD, only company managed project can have multiple active sprints once Jira admin enabled the option.  However, team managed project can only have one active sprint + the board cannot be setup to pull cross-projects content.

Hope this helps.

I agree with @Joseph Chung Yin here! This is exactly the options you have in case you want to run parallel sprints in one project in either Jira Server or Cloud.

Another consideration:  Naming convention for sprints.

Since sprints show up in a bunch of places in Jira (like dropdowns) from multiple Boards, they are notorious for being confused with one another.  It is important to name sprints meaningfully (e.g., prefix with the project key).  Likely even more important when running multiple active sprints per Board.

Agreed! We learned this the hard way!
