Issue Count Hack

David T Jones March 13, 2023

So i was trying to figure out a way to quickly get the total number of items resulting from a JQL query. I saw some other workarounds using dashboard gadgets etc but not this one.

The workaround involves using Jira automation global rules.

Steps as follows

  1. Create JQL of your interest in the number of issues that match
  2. Copy to clipboard
  3. Go to Global Automation
  4. Create a new rule
  5. Choose scheduled
  6. Click box to run based on JQL
  7. Paste your JQL
  8. Click validate JQL
  9. Viola! Your issue count is displayed even if its over 100k

Thanks @David T Jones . Interesting approach. I have always used a dashboard gadget e.g. Pie chart to get this info. I do this primarily because I generally I am looking for not just the total number of issues but the total number of issues by some category.
