Jira Software and Jira Align mapping

Bijal Patel August 1, 2023

Hi, I have a question when mapping Jira and Jira Align: In the pic below, for example its clear that Epics in Jira Core becomes Features in Jira Align; but what Jira Core levels becomes in purple boxes? In other words, which levels (issues types) in Jira Core become Mission, Vision, Values, Strategies, Goals, Themes, Epics and Capabilities.
I was wondering if I can get a Data Dictionary that describe these Jira align issue Types?

Thank you in advance.Mapping1.PNG

There aren't items in Jira Core that map to Capabilities, Epics, Themes, Goals, Strategies, or Mission, Vision, and Values. Those items exist in Jira Align but not in Jira.

The Jira Align integration guide provides the most complete understanding of the field mapping between Jira and Jira Align. You can find it here:

@Rich Sparks - Thank you for the prompt reply.

In our org I believe we are using Jira Advance Roadmap, thus we currently have Theme, Capability, Initiative, along with Epic, Story, Tasks and bugs (See attached picture).

So the question is it possible to link these existing items with Jira align? If yes, what would be the name convention?

I understand. Unfortunately, there is not currently a mapping of the items above the Epic level in Jira into Jira Align. So if you have those items in  AR, they won't be synchronized with the information in Jira Align.

ok. thank you for getting back to me

@Rich Sparks I was wondering if there is ANY manual way we can import the Themes, capabilities and initiatives from our current Jira Core to Jira Align?

Any other alternative to bulk move them?

Please advice,

As a one-off:
You could export the data, and then add the data into the Jira Align import template.
It's not a direct one-to-one, you would need to do manual data edits to get them in the right fields.

Ongoing, you could probably use the API

When implementing Jira Align, it's a transformation, so the data requires manipulation.

You can see more about the field mapping between Jira and Jira Align in the Jira Align Integration Guide. You can find that here:

Those fields (Capabilities, Epics, Themes, Goals, Strategies, Mission, Vision, and Values) exist only in Jira Align and aren't synchronized in Jira.

Hi @Bijal Patel the items in purple that you referenced are not part of the Jira-Jira Align sync and will reside solely in Jira Align.

This really annoys me - that Jira Align only syncs work (Features (Jira Epics), stories, subtask)

I have used <instance>/rest/align/api/docs/index.html to use API to sync some data from objectives, Initiatives (Jira Align Epics).

It's not great and only certain fields can be synced. E.g. health cannot be synced.
