Jira Cloud Defect Syncing to a Jira Align Feature

Rebecca Hylek January 31, 2023

Hello,

We have Jira (Cloud) and Jira Align.  I'm a Site Admin in Jira and Super Admin in Align.

We would like defects to be associated to a feature in Align.  Example:

  • Program A creates a new feature and assigns it to Team B.
  • Team B begins work on the new feature and a large defect is discovered.  A Jira defect issue type is created with 8 story points.
  • The defect issue type syncs to Align and can be located but it isn't associated with the feature.  When the business looks at the feature, they only see associated stories.

The defect issue type is correct in Align and is part of the issue type scheme used by the project team in Jira.

Under Platform Settings in Align, at the team level, Enable Defect Allocation is set to "no".  If we change this to Yes, will the defects associate with the feature?

@Rebecca Hylek  Changing defect allocation to yes will NOT make it show under the feature.  In order to get it to roll it up to the feature, you would need to make it a custom issue type so it will come over in Jira Align as a story with type = defect. (It will still be a defect in Jira).  This will allow the story to roll-up to the feature, show on the program board, be included in velocity, etc.  This will mean it won't be in a separate backlog and you won't be using the defect reporting in Jira Align.  Also, in the team room, they will show as stories and not defects.  You would just continue to use the defect reporting you have in Jira.  If you want to change it to a custom issue type, follow the second scenario listed in this document; https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Jira-Align-discussions/Jira-and-Jira-Align-Integration-Defect-or-Story-of-Type-Defect/td-p/1263844.

You will need to add a couple of extra things to do this since you have already implemented it the other way:

  1. Remove the values from the defect issue type (ID and Name) on the Jira Setup tab (admin-Jira Settings-Jira Setup)
  2. Add Defects as a custom issue type (see the article for instructions)
  3. Run JQL for stories in Jira Align so it will bring the defects over as stories. (Admin-Jira Settings-Jira Integration)
  4. Delete all the defects in Jira Align (Team-Defects)
  5. In the system roles (admin-roles), under the team section, turn the defect toggle off for all system roles.  Note for this step, if the super admin is going to be the only one to delete the defect in Jira Align, I would recommend turning off the toggle for all the other system roles earlier in the steps above and then once you have deleted all of them also turning off for the Super Admin.
  6. Turning off any defect reports you have turned on in the system roles.
