GitHub integration sync failed for some repositories

Moshe Ben-Shoham July 5, 2018

Hi,

We have integrated JIRA with GitHub using a DVCS account, as the documentation suggests. For the same GitHub accounts, most of the repositories are successfully synced, but for some we get an error saying "sync failed".

It is obviously not about bad authentication, because most repos do work.

What could be the reason?

Thanks.

Hey Moshe,

I've seen this happen before when setting up repos for the first time or syncing a lot of large ones. Let's see if this is your issue!

Github has an API rate limit that can easily be tripped by trying to pull the commit history (what Jira does when syncing a repo). Your account has 5,000 requests per hour before Github starts rejecting API calls. Using a curl command and the credentials for the user you're syncing with in Jira, you can see if the rate limit has been tripped. I've had luck in the past contacting GitHub through their contact form to ask for a temporarily higher limit while the first-time syncs for all the repos complete.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
