It's indeed a bug, check CWD-5680 for more information, I added a working workaround (in the comments) for Linux with the usage of the .tar.gz archive :)

Your mail service is set up to require TLS, so you need to enable that in the connection Crowd has with it.

I didn't select "use secure sockets layer(SSL)"

Yes, I know, that's why it is not working.
