SSO for jira data center

We are planning to implement Single sign-on for Jira data center, I am a little confused about the crowd and SAML.

1. do we need both for single sign-on 

2. do we need to purchase add-ons from the market place.

it all depends a bit on your final setup that you would like to achieve.

If you maybe could start with sharing what Identity Provider you would like to authenticate against, that would help us provide you with some more direction.
