We run Citrix Xenapp Virtual desktops running IE9 with Confluence 5.5.3. When we open an attachment it takes an age to download and open. This is not the same for physical machines and is not an issue downloading and opening documents from any other web based system or file share.
I suggest to check if this happens with other Browsers using the same system. Maybe using a Firebug while opening the attachment can show you which component is taking most of time to load in the Browser and can give you some hint on where to look over?
I couldn't find a specific error with this environment in Atlassian docs, so it's probably some misconfiguration in the system. I might have overlooked though, so I'll leave this question open for other people to help as well.
