What's the best way to count specific pages, not all under the same parent?

Let's say I have three parent pages, portfolio 1, 2 and 3.  Each parent can have several children (a child per each portfolio chapter being tracked).  Each child indicates information like "waiting on call" or "needs to be rewritten."

I'm using Page Properties to create a summary page of all the portfolios, but what's the best way I could get a count of pages with a certain status?  I could use labels, I guess, though I'd have to go change the label as the information changes.  Is there a way to get a count of how many pages have a certain label?  Is there a way to use the Decision blueprint to get a count?

I'm open to almost any clever ideas as long as I don't have to buy something.  The budget is gone.  I could create a user-macro...I think.  /;-]

Thanks so much!
