Sort a List Alphabetically in Confluence Page in Edit Mode

Karen_Mustain February 7, 2018

I am looking for a feature to allow the author/editor to permanently sort list items, like in a bulleted list, while creating or editing a page, so that the items are listed in alphabetic order. This is a similar feature in Microsoft Word: https://support.office.com/en-us/article/sort-a-list-alphabetically-117e95e4-c347-4c6e-b05f-4ad85cb5e015

Is anyone aware of an existing add-on that offers this functionality, or has anyone developed a macro.

Our users do not want to utilize a table.

https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/CONFSERVER-29816 is for a completely different idea -- being able to sort table rows.

The original request -- which I personally come across the need for several times a day -- is to be able to sort a list in-place while editing.

Would love to see this created as an official request for Confluence Server.

Although this post is quite old, we would like to let you know that our app "Content Tools for Confluence" (see https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1221973/content-tools-for-confluence) provides a macro for Confluence Cloud to sort lists automatically. You can check out our blog post https://weweave.net/blog/content-tools-for-confluence-orders-your-lists-automatically for more deatails.

Will it sort table rows while editing?

Is there a server version?

Hi @Michael Woffenden, the idea behind the app is that you don't have to worry about the order when you are in edit mode and the list and tables are sorted automatically in the view mode. In other words: The app does not change anything in the the edit mode.

Right now, we don't have a server version of that app. Please contact use here https://weweave.net/contact/contact-form/ in case you are interested in sponsoring the development of a server version of the app.

I would also use it if it were available for Confluence Server.

What about using Word and importing it to Confluence?

I just did this and it worked fine. Copied and pasted into Word and used the alphabetic sort. My document was in paragraphs so I sorted by paragraph in Word. Then cut from there and pasted back into Confluence. It even kept the links (but not attached documents).

There is already a customer request

https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/CONFSERVER-29816

Probably they wont fix it, as the resolution says...

The only workaround possible as far as i know are:

  • Save the page, order with column click, copy the text, edit the page, paste the copied table and save it.
  • Try with table filter plugin it has some nice features

Thanks @Fabrizio Galletti I had investigated the Table Filter plugin, but our users don't want to use a table for their lists.
