Incrementing a Space Variable

Sorry I am a complete novice here. I have a "Space" into which I want to insert a number of similar pages. Each page has the same template and contains text under various heading.

At the head of each page I want to insert a "reference number" so at the top of the template there is a variable for this.

When a new page is created I want the variable to increment (by 1) from the number in the previously created page.

Is there any mechanism for this?

There is no option for this. You would need to implement an app for your approach.
