Improving Search Functionality in Scroll Viewport for External Confluence Knowledge Base

Anamika Sarkar January 27, 2025

We host our Confluence-based knowledge base externally using Scroll Viewport. However, we’ve noticed that the search functionality on our external site's homepage doesn’t seem to be optimized for flexibility.

For example, when a user types in a keyword, the search results often don’t include relevant articles unless the exact word or phrase appears in the content or title. It doesn’t account for different forms of the same word (e.g., singular/plural, synonyms, etc.), which limits the search experience for our users.

Is there a way to improve this search behavior in Scroll Viewport? Specifically, we’d like to:

  1. Make search results more intuitive and forgiving (e.g., accounting for variations like singular/plural forms or related keywords).
  2. Possibly leverage features like synonyms, stemming, or fuzzy search.

Does Scroll Viewport offer any built-in tools for search optimization, or would this require customizations or third-party integrations?

Any suggestions or best practices would be greatly appreciated!

Hello @Anamika Sarkar

A fellow Viewport user here (this is our site)

Generally speaking, we're getting good search results (and great SEO) by following a couple of simple rules.

  • use key words in the first paragraph
  • use hidden excerpt (confluence macro) with key words on important pages
