How to remotely login a user

Marc Demhartner December 18, 2018

Hello,

we want to provide a Website link from our existing SaaS application to our hosted confluence site for documentation porpurses.

So, for this, we want the user not to have to sign in again at the confluence system with username & password.

Curretnly we only see the option to give username and password (in cleartext!) with in the URL - we can´t believe that this is the only option ?!

Please describe how we can accomplish a remote login procedure on our local installed confluence.

Thank you.

Hello Marc,

Having users accessing a system without having to login is a major plus when pushing for adoption and simplified access. In order to do this with Confluence, you have a few options available to you.

The first option would be to use a SAML integration to allow for SSO type access into your systems. You can find more about SAML and SSO through the following:

Server: SSO and SAML support

Single Sign-on Integration with the Atlassian stack

The other option would require the use of Atlassian Crowd. Crowd would act as your primary authentication source and all users would (when accessing Atlassian tools) authenticate through Crowd. Crowd also offers SSO capabilities. You can find more about Crowd at the following;

Introduction to Crowd

I hope this provides better options then having plain text usernames within a URL. Please let us know if you would like any further information.

Hi @Marc Demhartner.

As @Stephen Sifers mentions, Crowd and SAML SSO are two options for limiting the number of manual logins. If you use Microsoft Active Directory as user directory, you can also setup Integrated Windows Authentication (Kerberos) to give users a password-free link from your SaaS application.

You can also set this up in combination with SAML SSO to achieve the best link and login experience in both trusted and remote networks.

Kantega SSO is one of the vendors delivering add-ons to Confluence with this functionality.
