How to Restrict Comment Visibility in Confluence by User Group

Mark Stephan December 2, 2019

Our Confluence is log-in access only, and Client s have logins to access it.

Let's say our clients are part of the user group 'Client'.

All other users who are internal are part of other user groups.

We want our internal users to be able to CRUD comments, but no comments should be CRUD, especially READ, by our clients.

We don't want clients to do the following to Confluence Comments:

  • Create
  • Read
  • Update (Edit)
  • Delete

How do we do this? If not out fo the box, is it possible to do not out of the box via configuration or customization?

Platform: Confluence Server (latest).

Hi @Mark Stephan ,

I see that Talk - Advanced Inline Comments can help you. The app has a feature that allows setting visibility restrictions for the comments on a space level for specific users or groups. You say you want your comments will be visible only internally. Also, you want to block your clients from creating comments.

1) You need to set Talk space permissions for the talk inline comments only for a group or/and users who can view them. For example, you want to restrict viewing for the following groups and users as in the picture. A user with Confluence admin right needs to go to the Space tools - Permissions - Talk permissions and add them:

2)  To prevent your customers from leaving comments you need to give Comments and Page permissions to the group you specified in the Talk space permissions. Talk comments work when users have Comments or Page permissions, so you need to take them both from your clients. When you disable Comments permissions, your clients also won't be able to leave page comments (on the bottom of the page) as well as the inline ones.
