How do you know which editor a page uses?

Francesco Cipollone June 22, 2020

How do you know which editor a page uses, without editing a page?

We have hundreds of pages, in either the Legacy or the new Editor, and going to "Edit" is very time-consuming. Visually identifying the editor used would greatly speed up our upgrades to the New Editor.

Do you have any clues - however small - visible on the page?
Thank you

Hello Francesco,

Thank you for raising this, I'm sure a lot of other users will have the same question!

Besides the editor differences that Matt mentioned, there are a few subtle differences when viewing the page.

For example, when a page is using the new editor, the author information will be centered below the page breadcrumbs:

old.pngnew.png

I hope this helps you! Let me know if you still have any doubts about which editor you're using.

Take care,

Shannon

Hello Shannon, -

I'm afraid that is not the case for me.
The Author Information is on the Left in both cases.

Once again, I'm looking to save time in opening and closing the editor on hundreds of pages.
If there is any other hind you can share, that would help us out.

Thank you,

Francesco

Francesco,

That's odd; could you show me a screenshot of the page that's on the new editor where the author information is on the left? I've not yet seen a new editor page that didn't have the information centered. Please also include a picture of the page in edit mode, just to confirm it is indeed on the new editor.

Otherwise, you would be able to tell if a page is on the new editor, depending on what macros are being used on the page. For example, there are new colors in the status and table macros. In fact, tables were completely revamped in the new editor, so you would see a difference in formatting there overall.

Shannon, -

"on the new editor []  the author information is on the left
I've not yet seen a new editor page that didn't have the information centered."

Left or Centered Author information depends on:
"Make page fixed width" / "Make page full-width" (represented by the double arrows in Editor mode.

So this information cannot be used to tell the difference between the New and Old editors, without going into Editor mode.

Do you have any other clues to give, please?

Thank you,

Francesco

Hi Francesco,

I'm experiencing the same behavior now with the author information, so it appears that this has been corrected and will now be in-line with the content in the New Editor.

Some macros will display differently depending on if the page is on the Legacy or newer editor. For example, Status macros and Tables have additional colors.

However, it's possible that your page doesn't contain any macros that appear differently across the editors. In this case, it will be very difficult for you to determine by viewing the page alone which editor is using. You will need to edit the page to view the editor the page is using.

A workaround for that would be to use REST-API to determine this:

I hope that helps, but do let me know if you have any trouble.

Take care,

Shannon

Hello Shannon, -

It looks like I do not have permission to use the REST API

Thank you for trying

Hello @Francesco Cipollone,

As long as you have an account on the Cloud site, you should be able to generate an API token and make these requests.

Some API requests are specific to site admins, and you won't be able to access or modify pages and spaces you don't have permission to see, but there shouldn't be anything preventing your access to the Cloud Confluence REST-API in general.

Is there a particular issue you were having when attempting to use REST-API?

Take care,

Shannon

They offer some hints here: https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Confluence-questions/I-have-the-new-editor-is-it-possible-to-have-the-legacy-editor/qaq-p/1372761

It looks like it really comes down to what's in the toolbar.

Francesco Cipollone June 24, 2020

The toolbar is useful only if you are already in edit mode.
But the question is about having an indication of which editor a page uses, without editing a page.

I have put 2 similar pages side-by-side, one created with the New editor and the other created with the Legacy editor, and I have not seen any difference (without clicking on Edit!)

But perhaps there is a tell-tale hint that differentiates them.
Can you help?

Thank you

Thank you, Francesco
