How are anonymous edits tracked if system does not permit anonymous access?

This question is in reference to Atlassian Documentation: Viewing Site Statistics

We are seeing a listing for "Anonymous users" under "Most active contributors" even though we do not permit anonymous access to site. What might cause this erroneous report?

Answer accepted

I am not sure this is the only way you can get anonymous contributors, but it is one way. Deleting users who have contributed can cause this.
