Data information about Confluence integration with Slack

Thor Henrik Nordvik May 19, 2021

I work for a governmental agency, and we are looking into Confluence integration with Slack. But since we are an governmental agency we are a bit concerned about our data.

And wonder about these questions

  • What data is sendt out of Confluence with this integration ?
  • Is there a way to configure what data that will be sendt ?
  • Is the data sendt straight to our Slack instance, or does it go through an Atlassian server ?
  • Is there a way to sett restrictions on what spaces that can pushe date to Slack, og what channels it can be pushed to ?

Hi Thor, great questions! Here are some notes about each:

  • The integration sends mostly updates about new content (pages, blogs) and updates to those pages - depending on the configuration you have in Confluence. It's on the Confluence side that notifications are triggered; what gets sent to Slack is essentially what you see in the channels you configure notifications for. You can replace some emails with personal notifications at a per-user level - the app can notify you about updates for pages you're watching. There's also the possibility of sending a list of pages if someone uses the /confluence search command in Slack.
  • Configuration - as a Confluence administrator, you can see and edit the configured notifications to channels. See how to do this in the documentation. Note that you won't see any personal notifications at the global level.
  • The data goes straight from your Confluence instance to Slack's app infrastructure. It is not sent through intermediate Atlassian servers.
  • There isn't a way to set restrictions out of the box, although you are welcome to modify the integration as you see fit and have the technical ability to do. The app is offered as an open-source project that you can fully modify for your own needs.

Cheers,
