Cyrillic attachments (doc, docx) preview issue

M June 22, 2015

Hello, currently experiencing issues with cyrillic attachments in confluence, preview viewer shows "[][][]" or "AAAA" instead of any cyrillic characters.

Steps to reproduse

  1. Install clean confluence atlassian-confluence-5.8.4-1-x64.bin (host Centos 6.6 x64)
  2. Configure it (embeded database or MySQL, both tested)
  3. Attach file with cyrillic letters
  4. Click to preview the file (MS office .docx)

This is what you got as the result:

1.PNG

But expectation is correctly viewed file

2.PNG

Any tips?

This issue was raised in ticket https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/CONF-36557.  The solution is to install the necessary fonts on linux into /usr/share/fonts (or any subdirectory under that).  Then restart Confluence and the fonts should be available.  I would recommend looking in Word to see which font was used and make sure that one is installed.  Note that for files you have already previewed, the preview will be cached, so you may have to delete the file and/or upload a new version for the preview to be regenerated.

Thanks Stephen, your solution worked, but for a while, is there any way to troubleshoot this issue?

I wish I could say for sure, but you're probably better off getting help from Atlassian Support. I see that in the ticket it shows that the problem was fixed in Confluence 5.8.8, so if you upgrade to a newer version it might fix the issue for good.

If you have checked this KB out (https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/DOC/Troubleshooting+Character+Encodings) and it does not work for you, it's either not supported or a bug which you can raise at https://jira.atlassian.com

Thanks that helped, i copied fonts from C:\Windows\Fonts to /usr/share/fonts/ and it worked after i downloaded and uploaded my doc.
Is there anyway to renew that document cache? So i don't have to reupload all documents to confluence
UPD: not working again

1)stop confluence (v5.9.7)

2)delete-
confluence-home/shared-home/dcl-document
confluence-home/shared-home/dcl-thumbnail

3)start confluence

Max, today is passed few years from time this post has been left here, with this issue.

I guess, Your don't have this issue in last Confluence version, because I guess do Your have good solution. smile Every Russian speak admin will be happy to know it. Today last version is 6.0.6, so, how did Your fix this issue with cyrillic (MS Word) attachments?

Thanks

======

In the v.6.0.6 this problem is exist and actual, every step described here don't gave me result sad

Also, I did try this: https://confluence.atlassian.com/confkb/the-text-in-a-powerpoint-excel-or-word-document-looks-different-when-using-the-viewfile-macro-200213562.html
Also, no any results.

I find solution.

Need to copy all fonts from Windows, and put this option: CATALINA_OPTS="-Dconfluence.document.conversion.fontpath=/usr/share/fonts/msttcore ${CATALINA_OPTS}"

to setenv.sh file, for more information read https://confluence.atlassian.com/doc/configuring-system-properties-168002854.html

Good luck alligators wink
