Change group name spelling in Confluence ?

This question is in reference to Atlassian Documentation: User Getting Logged Out Intermittently Due to the Groupname Case Change in LDAP

This article suggests to resolve difference in group name spellings by changing it in the remote directory.

It may be hard to change the remote (ie AD) directory, as many others depends upon it. Can it be changed in the confluence side instead, adopting to the new (arguable corrected) spelling?

No.  If you're importing a group name, it's imported as it is.  It's not a local thing, it's using the AD group.
