Best Practice for Database setup

Jayson Lewis October 3, 2017

Is there a recommendation or best practice for a database setup when we are using Jira Service Desk Server and Confluence Server together?

I currently have JSD and Confluence installed on separate servers, but wasn't sure if I should

  1. create a separate database server for the both of them to connect
  2. create individual database instances on the separate servers themselves
  3. create 2 separate database servers for them to individually connect to

We are an SMB and won't have extraordinarily large environments, but I wasn't sure what the best route for this was. I have a MS datacenter server license so don't need to worry about licensing costs for different servers.

A lot of people run them on the same database instance, without problems.  It's fine to run them on local servers or on separate dedicated servers too.  Let your hardware, backup regime and licencing determine the route - the applications just want their own place to store data.

You just need to be sure that they do not share any data space.  Use simple separate databases.
