Migrating a wiki from GitLab to Confluence Cloud

Hello y'all! I am brainstorming ideas on how to make this task as easy as possible. We currently have a few too many ways that people in our company are storing documentation. Of course I prefer most of it to be housed in Confluence. A large portion of our documentation currently resides in GitLab, where it is stored as Markdown (.md) files. 
We are considering creating a python script that will go through Confluence's REST API and GitLab's API to pull the files from there and create new spaces/pages in Confluence. I was wondering if anybody in the community had experience doing this, or if anyone here might know some easier ways of going about this? I've seen addons in confluence that mirror what is in GitLab, but I am looking for a solution so we can get rid of everything in GitLab.
Any tips or suggestions in general would be helpful too!

Side note: All of the documentation that is now in GitLab was very recently migrated over from BitBucket. There are still copies of everything in Bitbucket, so if it is easier to migrate from BitBucket to Confluence we can try that route as well!

There is an interesting project that syncs MD docs from Git to Confluence pages! You can consider your migration a "one-time sync", of course.

I never tried the tool, but it has quite some stars on GitHub, there it is definitely worth a try!
