Hi @Martin Brignall! Thank you for your question and interest. Both Backstage and Compass tackle exciting challenges - helping DevOps teams improve their distributed architecture and microservices. Backstage is a self-hosted solution, while Compass is a SaaS solution maintained by Atlassian.

Compass addresses the main challenges faced by DevOps teams around DevOps health and a component catalog that you can utilize right away, with extensibility to ensure that you can further customize Compass for your exact needs. You can realize these benefits with a lower cost of setup and maintenance than hosting your own solution.

We've taken our expertise and experience helping software development teams for over 20 years to help build Compass, and we’re thrilled by the response!

Thanks so much for your response.

Compass is really great, looking forward to utilising.

Another interesting comparison would be between Compass and the Backstage managed service offered by Roadie.

Related questions:

  • Is Compass open source? Can Compass and Backstage share plugins/extensions?
  • Is there a list of contributed plugins? I'm not seeing Compass listed in the Atlassian Marketplace.

No, Compass is not Open Source, it is an Atlassian product.

Atlassian is not bad at open-source, they offer cheap or free licences to support open-source products, and when they decide to lose a  product, they release it at open source.

Compass is quite new to Atlassian, it's not going to be OS for a long time, if ever.
