An early look at Compass pricing

[5/16 Update: Get the latest pricing update here.]

Compass was in alpha for a year before recently moving to beta, showing our confidence that the problem of software sprawl exists and our ability to provide a solution that helps engineering teams build a world-class developer experience. We have spoken to many of you who are excited to try and expand your use of Compass, but are looking for more clarity around our pricing model.

Leaning into one of our core values at Atlassian “open company, no bullshit”, we want to share how we are currently thinking about pricing so you can have more confidence in betting on Compass and plan accordingly from a financial perspective, without any major surprises.

Today’s price: All features are FREE for all users

From now and throughout our beta, all features in Compass are free to use for all users. Compass is a stand-alone product, so you just need to invite new users to the product to give them access. This will not change until we transition into general availability (timeline TBD) and we promise to provide at least 3 months notice of what our pricing will be with clear paths to opt-out before you incur any costs associated with Compass.

Future price: We are still exploring and leaning towards a structure similar to Jira Software, Confluence, and Bitbucket.

As we transition into general availability we expect Compass will align with Atlassian’s transparent and great value pricing philosophy, and will likely echo how Jira Software, Confluence, and Bitbucket pricing is structured. What that means is:

  1. A free level that will provide access to Compass, possibly with a limit on total users and on access to specific features. We have not decided what these limits will be yet.

  2. Paid level(s) charged per user, that will include standard and premium features that are best suited to organisations with large, complex distributed systems or teams.

We can’t promise what the final outcome will be, but we currently believe Compass will be widely used for both read/write access across the entire engineering organisation, as well as other roles that are interested in the developer experience that cuts across development and operations. We are likely to provide a low price per user model so that Compass will be affordable and deliver substantially more value than its cost to customers.

We are committed to providing a simple, intuitive and transparent pricing policy for Compass. If you have questions about costs or want to share your feedback to help shape our pricing model, please reach out directly via the “give feedback” link in the product or drop a comment below.

Thank you once again for embarking on this journey with us!
