What is the Impact of linking Bitbucket Server to a Jira Software server?

Stephan Haertel March 21, 2018

Hi,

we are running local Jira and Bitbucket servers as part of our validated development environment. Now we want to link these two applications.

If we link Jira and Bitbucket, is there any specification / documentation on ...

  1. How exactly will Jira change?
  2. How exactly will Bitbucket change?

We have to foresee the impact of linking Jira and Bitbucket to make sure our workflows and security settings are not breached. Any input to narrow down the scope of testing is welcome - thanks!
Stephan

If you have both JIRA and Bitbucket server, I strongly recommend you to integrate them to take advantage of all the traceability features. Take a look at the below documentations for the value it brings and some tips:

@Jobin Kuruvilla [Adaptavist]That does not seem to exactly answer the question: you're stating the advantages of linking the 2 systems, not the impact of doing so ...

I guess the question is more: will there be data or configuration modifications due to this linking of systems?

@Pierrick_LebigreWhat do you mean by configuration modifications?

The application linking itself is a configuration. And it will add data from one system into another for sure. It doesn't have much of a negative impact, provided the servers have enough memory, CPU etc. IMO, the benefits outweigh the administrative efforts.

@Jobin Kuruvilla [Adaptavist]We're running a validated jira system, which means we have to ensure that any modification to the system (related to either data or configuration) is fully understood and controlled. That's why we need to know what's happening behind the scene when linking jira with bitbucket: will there be additional custom fields added? screens modifications? issue types?

The added value of doing this link is not questioned here, we're well aware of that, but we still need to understand what's exactly going to happen ...

There are no custom fields added. But there will be cached data, which then gets displayed under the development panel, release hub etc inside JIRA. I am sure there might be other places but you might be able to figure it out from the features listed in the above links.

Another thing you might want to take a look at will be triggers.

I haven't seen a list anywhere and it might change over versions as it depends on the implementation.
