Do I need to upgrade remote agents when upgrading server from 5.7 to 5.9?

I am upgrading the Bamboo server from 5.7 to 5.9. Is an upgrade of all remote agents required as well?

Remote agents are upgraded automatically as soon as they connect to a new Bamboo server.

What about a downgrade? If I had to rollback the server to the previous version for some reason. Would they downgrade themselves as well?
