Hi @Purvi Patel

If you are in a company managed project, then there is ootb Subtask blocking condition, which will be much easier to use

Cheers

I am not a Jira expert, would you be able to direct me how to set it up?

Sure! Follow the steps:

  1. Identify the Workflow:
    • Go to your Jira project's settings > 'Workflows'.
    • Find the workflow associated with the issue type where you want to enforce closing sub-tasks first
    • If you see the new editor, switch to the old editor.
  2. Locate the Transition:
    • In diagram mode, click on the line pointing to the Done status and click Conditions in the properties panel
  3. Add a Condition:
    • Add a new condition of the type "Sub-Task Blocking Condition".
    • Select all the sub-task statuses required to allow parent issue transition
  4. Save and Publish:
    • Save your changes to the validator.
    • Publish the updated workflow.

You can also check out the video where I follow similar steps, but I am adding a different validator. The steps at the beginning are very similar.

I hope this is helpful for you, regards!
