Insight Automation (Datacenter) Smart Values? Placeholders? Where is the documentation?

Im having trouble with insight automation.  I would like to combine some fields as the Name field but none of the suggestions of using smart values or placeholders are working.

When I try to use the $(AttributeName) or {{object.AttributeName}} I literally get those exact strings.  Any advice?
