Hey,

I am currently working with some automations. Getting emails can be quite annoying and to keep them on my to do list, i have to keep them in my mailbox or create a jira issue. Is there a way to automatically create an issue when an automation fails?

Would love to have a board where the failed automations are registered as for example:
- type: bug
- summary: automation name
- description: the audit log of the fail
- due date: date of error + something (7 orso)

Hi @Sjoerd Bernards -- Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

There is nothing built-in to automatically create a Jira issue for a failed rule execution.

One workaround would be to use email rules in your email application to raise the visibility of the received email, such as with flagging, urgency, alerting, etc.

Another possible workaround would be:

  • using your email application, create an email rule to detect a rule error notification, and forward the email to your Jira email address
  • work with your Jira site admin to set up an email handler in Jira, and automatically create the new issue.

This will not contain all the information you asked for, but it will contain a link to the audit log.

Please note well: even this workaround will not detect all possible rule problems, at least for these cases, no rule error email will be sent...

  1. When there is a logical error in a rule that shows no errors
  2. When there is a user error entering Jira issue data and a rule does not trigger
  3. When there is an automation engine / Jira outage and scheduled rules do not run
  4. When your site has exceeded usage limits for rule, no further executions may run
  5. When your site has exceeded usage limits for emails
  6. When another admin has disabled (or deleted) a rule which is still needed

Kind regards,
Bill
