Add remaining estimate from Subtask to Parent's Original estimate

tatevikalaverdyan October 16, 2024

Hi community.

I have an automation which sums up remaining estimates from subtasks to Parent's Original Estimate. Now I need another automation which will Add new created subtask's Remaining estimate to Original estimate of parent. No need to sum up remaining estimates on that point just add that single value to Parent's Original.

Can you help with advanced edit with smart values?

Hi @tatevikalaverdyan

Is the rule image you show your current rule, and you want a second rule for the additional scenario of creating a new subtask?

If so, what have you tried thus far to solve this need?  If you have a rule that is not working as expected, please post an image of that rule and the audit log details; those will provide context for the community to offer suggestions.

If you have not yet started the other rule...the scenario you described has many cases to handle, depending upon how accurately you want the value in the parent issue to be.  For example:

  • when a subtask is added to a story, sum the values to update the story
  • when a subtask is updated for time tracking...
  • when a subtask is removed from a story
  • ...

At a minimum, I recommend re-summing the values each time rather than adding / subtracting from the Original Estimate field.  That will reduce the chance of errors creating an inaccurate sum.

Kind regards,
Bill
