Solution for Bigs clients that does not want to migrate to the cloud

Pilar Lopez Gracia September 7, 2021

HI,

I am from Accenture SL, and we haver serveral clients were we are implementing Atlassian produts; JSW, Jira SM, Confluence, etc. cloud.

At the moment we are in conversations with a very big financial client in Spain, in order to extend their processes implemented with JIRA.

They have JIRA SM and JIRA SW server, and their policy about data does not allow then to implement JIRA Cloud, ii is not possible.

The company is a very big financial entity belong to the state, may be this is the reason why.

My question to the community is: What does offer Atlassian in these cases?

Is there eany solution for this situation?

Thanks a lot for your answers

Pilar Lopez Gracia

Hi @Pilar Lopez Gracia

What about their data policy doesn't allow them to use Jira Cloud? Is it a data residency issue? It looks like Jira Cloud is coming out with a data residency option but your client can also look into Jira Data Centre instead as well.

Let me know if you need expert help with your client as this is something I can help with.

Thanks  alot,

I think the solution could be data center, but which one is the big difference? betwen data center and Cloud? data center can be in their infra or asking for the Aws, or azzure, ritgh?

Data center is indeed an on premise solution which can be run in cluster (multiple nodes) with some added features such as archiving of projects.

If they want it can be run on a AWS or Azure infrastructure but it’s not mandatory.

Cloud is a whole different thing and developed separate. That also runs on AWS under management of Atlassian

In Australia we have data residency requirements for many government departments and some other organisations. Atlassian are however, rolling out hosting in Australia, but for many organisations datacenter is the only option right now.

Hi Pilar,

The only choice is to go to Data Center. The client can manage the applications on their own infrastructure and with the control to meet their constraints. There are also managed hosting providers for Atlassian Data Center applications. Cheers!

Migrating from server to datacenter can be as much as changing the license key.

Changing it will open up features to allow more nodes to be added.

there are some small differences between server and dc but they only add and don’t have impact on the existing situation.

keep in mind tho that dc is also a subscription based license and not perpetual.

Hi Pilar,
The differences are not that great and Dirk is correct with the statement about "only a different license." Later versions, specifically supported LTS, should only require a new license key. This will turn the server version into a single-node DC version.

The primary differences between server and DC are https://confluence.atlassian.com/enterprise/jira-server-and-data-center-feature-comparison-953651628.html for jira and https://confluence.atlassian.com/doc/confluence-server-and-data-center-feature-comparison-953652032.html for confluence.

Dirk is also correct about the license and its need for annual renewal. Failing to renew a DC license will cause problems. Cheers!

If Cloud is out, then DC is your only option.

DC and Server are actually the same software, configured very differently.  You can run Server and DC nodes on anything you want to (your own real or virtual hardware, Azure, AWS, etc)

In more recent versions of the Atlassian applications, Atlassian have made it a lot easier to "move" from Server to DC.  You can in fact convert your Server to DC now by just applying new DC licences to an existing server.  It makes the Server into a single-node DC install (adding nodes, load balancers, clustered database nodes and so-on still requires a bit more thought, but flipping a single server to DC is absolutely trivial nowadays)

Most people I know who are going Server to DC are taking advantage of that.  Even when they're retiring or deprecating the servers their Jira/Confluence/Bitbucket server is running on, their easiest route is:

  1. Convert server to single DC node (doesn't even need down-time)
  2. Add other nodes into the cluster, set up the load-balancers and networking etc
  3. Drop the "old" node once the others are all ready to take over

The "migration" is remarkably easy when you do it that way!

Thanks a lot for your response,

I will read all the info about DC in the Atlassian web and make this recomendation to the client.

Thanks a lot.

Is there some date when DC will be dropped by Atlassian like they drop Server now?

There are no plans to drop DC.

It's unlikely to even be discussed until all the big clients have told Atlassian that they're moving off it for whatever reasons, and that's just not happening any time soon.  There's been a lot of movement from Server to DC, as Cloud simply isn't suitable for a lot more people than you'd assume, and people are still replacing legacy systems with Atlassian, some of it being DC.

Hi @Pilar Lopez Gracia

See if the clients opt for Datacenter then they can host on either AWS or Azure.

But they need to manage all the things like Upgradation, Maintainence, etc.

But if the client opts for Cloud then everything can be managed by Atlassian Itself, like automatically Upgradation, Performance optimization, etc.

Just want to clarify, they can host it not just on AWS or Azure..

they can host it on their own hardware too. Datacenter is more of a concept where you can have a multi node system (or a single node one) but where it is hosted is up to you.

Hi @Pilar Lopez Gracia 👋

I agree with the consensus here, Data Center sounds like the right direction for your client to go down.
