Migration Runbook

This article will cover what is a migration runbook and why is it so important?

If you are familiar with migrations, you probably are aware of the complexities that can be involved. You want to ensure you have followed all the required steps beforehand so you don’t run into blockers half way through the process that would delay all your efforts.

A runbook is the “holy book” of migrations, it enforces structure as it’s a detailed guide for completing all the steps and tasks that are required for every phase of the migration. A runbook lists every step of the migration plan, along of who owns it and how long it will take. It’s crucial to have all the information updated on the runbook so you know what to expect during the production migration and have an estimate on how long the production migration will take.

You can download a template of the Atlassian runbook from the Atlassian Migration Toolkit

Moreover, this video outlines how to  create a migration runbook.
