Data Residency Roadmap Update

Hello everyone!

Over the past 12 months, we’ve made a lot of progress on our data residency strategy, including:

• Building data residency capabilities for Jira Software, Confluence, and Jira Service Management

• Launching data residency for Enterprise plans

• Opening up the European Union (EU) and United States (US) locations as data residency options

• Extending data residency to our Standard and Premium licenses for no additional cost

• Opening up our 3rd location, Australia, as a new data residency location

We’ve learned a lot about customer requirements for data residency, including locations, data scope, and ease of use.

We’ve also learned a tremendous amount while developing our infrastructure to support data residency across our cloud products. We are so excited about the tremendous progress we’ve made in the past 12 months on data residency, being able to address many of your needs. After launching support for the Australia location at the end of September, and as we’re currently rolling out Data Residency to the rest of our existing Standard and Premium customers, we wanted to re-evaluate our upcoming investments. This is a common practice in software to ensure we focus on your top priorities and bring value to you faster. 

Atlassian is committed to becoming a leader in data residency, and in order to provide you with the best solution and to support the number of locations we aim to support, we need to invest some additional time improving our data residency infrastructure. These investments will allow us to launch new locations much more quickly in the future and give us the ability to respond faster to new or changing regulations across various countries

We’ve made the decision to focus on improving our data residency infrastructure, which will allow us to launch new locations much more quickly in the future and give us the ability to respond faster to new or changing regulations across various countries. This work will also help accelerate other priorities that bring greater value to you. 

This will require us to delay our launch of data residency support for the United Kingdom, Japan, and Canada locations until 2023. We have recently updated the cloud roadmap to reflect this change. 

Data residency is one of many investments in earning and retaining customer trust; it's one of our highest priorities as a company. We’ve delivered a number of items here, in addition to the work we’ve highlighted for data residency above.

A few, of the many highlights from the past several quarters, are: 

• Continued improvement on performance, reliability, and scalability
• Adding monthly release tracks
  
• Enhancements to sandbox including data copying and adding apps
• Mobile application management allows admins to enforce security controls on mobile app usage
• Improvements in authentication settings
  
• Easier movement of data between different cloud sites with cloud-to-cloud migration for Jira Software

And some of the major items we’re still working on:

• Bring your own key (BYOK) encryption
  
• Financial Services regulations Compliance
• HIPAA regulations compliance
• Improvements to backup & restore features
• User activity log
• Support for multiple identity providers in a single organization

Our company is in the Healthcare business in Europe and have about 200 licenses. To be able to fully benefit from Jira and Confluence we would need to have dataresidency in Europe. As for now we need to be outside the AD due to this fact.

Our questions are: 

• Why do you state on your pricing website that standard licenses can have data residency when it obviouisly is not correct... Do we need to buy the more expensive licenses when we do not need the other features from Premium.
• When will you again be able to move new requeste and why does it state on your website: 

  We’re temporarily not accepting new move requests

  We’re currently unable to accept new data residency move requests as we’re performing an update.

• Many of our other software providers have a EU site. It can be reached from US but all data is located in EU. Will your changes for 2023 solve this?

• We began offering Data Residency to our Standard and Premium customers back in October 2021, released progressively till we reached 100% of them early in 2022. 
• We recently found a problem, in oder to address it we had to temporarily suspend the ability for all customers to schedule Data Residency migrations to specific locations.

We regret the trouble, and we are doing our best to make Data Residency available again as soon as possible
