How to auto check one value in checkbox field during transition

Hello:

I have 5 line items in a checkbox field and would like to hit a transition and during the post, to check one of the line items.

E.g.,:

Item a 

Item b

Item c

During Transition I want Item b to be checked.

Is this possible without script or addon?

It's ok - I'll just create each new field for the 10 items... the view in Edit for Checklist is one paragraph of text and doesn't work as a checklist... it's not a list... that's unfortunate and kind of useless if the view isn't ... readable - hope there's a feature request for that and gets fixed one day.
