EazyBI - How to create relative time dimensions to compare periods with Percentages?

mateus_oliveira February 19, 2025

I'm trying to create charts and tables comparing the number of issues created during certain time periods.
I was specially asked to get the following comparison:

How many tasks were created in this year so far VS. How many tasks were created during the same period last year, in percent

I would also have to create this same comparison for "fixed" time periods (Year, Semester, Quarter, Month...), and with numbers instead of Percent comparison, but just the "Year To Date" part seems like the most complex one, as it changes every day, moving the "End date" but keeping the "Start date" in place - and, to make things worse, all the years are supposed to be calculated as starting in December of the previous year, as it's when the Tax Year starts for the company.

I tried to understand the Custom Measures syntax, but the documentation about Custom Calculated Measures, Time Members/Periods and their interactions is huge and pretty hard to understand... I'll definitely delve into it, as EazyBI seems to be a rich and robust tool, but for the due time I have, I won't be able to deliver this by myself...

Any help is appreciated. Just by understanding how the measures syntax works from examples and recommendations I may receive here, I believe I'll be able to get to what I need.

Thank you everyone!

Hello @mateus_oliveira

You can use Standard "Time ago" calculations in eazyBI to build this report.

Here's what you can do:

  • add Time dimension in Rows. In my example below, I have selected a "month" level member. You can also add Time dimension to Pages and select "Current year" member to filter by it.
  • select "Issues created" under Measures
  • left-click on "Issues created" and select "Add calculated" -> "Time ago" -> "year ago" and "year ago change %"

I hope this helps.
