Is there an automation to switch epics that are "open" to in progress?

Advanced Roadmaps will only count Epics that have been moved to "In Progress" so if a team has an Epic that has the status of "Open" it will not be counted in the overall progress for the Initiative until its status has been changed. An Epic being "Open" does not seem to count as "To-do" for an Initiative but I am unsure if this is something we can change via an automation.

Hi @Nia Smith

Can I clarify the need here, where is this count being displayed in Advanced Roadmaps? Is this the "Progress (issue count)" field?

If yes, it should count all the Epics - not just those which are In Progress - although it will split them by status category (To Do, In Progress, Done).

I would also check "Open" hasn't somehow become uncategorised as a Status - to do this you'll need to be a Jira Admin, and then...

  1. Go to Settings > Issues
  2. Select Statuses from the left-hand menu
  3. Locate Open in the list
  4. Ensure the Category is not "No Category"
  5. If it is, press "Edit" from the Actions column
  6. Change the category to the appropriate one - eg. To Do

^ Should fix the issue.

@Nia Smith -

Welcome to the community.  In AR for Jira tool, there is no automation which can be customized.  Typically, the automation is done in your issue sources projects.  In the projects, you can create automation rule using Automation for Jira (see reference link below) which can update your Epic's transition based on your condition.

Jira Cloud automation | Cloud automation Cloud | Atlassian Support

Once the source issues are updated, then AR for Jira plan will also be updated.

Hope this helps.

Best, Joseph
