Program Board feature update: more flexibility in your board configuration

Hey everyone, I’m Rhys, a Product Manager for Jira Plans, and I’m here to announce an update to the Program Board that’s currently in open Beta.

Based on the feedback we’ve heard so far, we’ve prioritized – and are releasing today – an improvement that give you more flexibility in how the columns in your board are configured. You can now adjust:

  • the duration of each column (between 1 to 4 weeks) and
  • the number of columns on your board

These two variables can be used to change the overall duration of your Program board to between 7 and 16 weeks. Let’s look at some of the configuration options that are now available.

This board has 13 columns each lasting one week

If one column spans...   You can add between...  for a total duration of
1 week   7 to 13 columns 7 to 13 weeks
2 weeks  5 to 8 columns 10 to 16 weeks
3 weeks  4 to 5 columns 12 to 15 weeks
4 weeks  3 to 4 columns 12 to 16 weeks

We set these limitations because the Program board is optimized for delivery plans focused on a quarterly timeframe, give or take.

Try it out and let us know how it works for your teams. Does it make your planning easier? What other features do you want to see? The Program board is still in open Beta, and we’d love to hear your feedback on what other improvements we can make before it fully rolls out.

Looking forward, the next major improvement we’ll be shipping is improvements to how we visualize dependencies in this view. Watch the Atlassian Cloud feature roadmap for updates on when that’s coming.

Until then, happy planning!

This will make it usable for our next PI Planning Event. We use a sprint length of 3 weeks so with the 2 weeks now it isn't really usable for us. Can't wait to show this to the members of my ART. When will this be live?

@Sander van Laarhoven It finishes rolling out this week, so hopefully you'll see it soon!

Edit: unless your site is on release tracks, in which case it'll reach your site by November 12th.
