show custom text on screen

I wish to show some instructions on a custom screen which appears during certain transition. Since I did not find another way I've created a custom field, gave it default text value and added it to the screen.

Now I see the field however it appears empty. The default text is not there.

Can anyone find explanation, or provide alternative way for showing instructions on a screen?
