Best way to validate dependent date and time fields in Jira Forms?

Hello everyone,

I'm looking for recommendations on handling dependent date and time inputs within Jira Forms.

I'm working on a workflow where the final result depends on multiple user-provided values, including date and time fields. The challenge is ensuring that the entered data remains consistent and valid before the issue is submitted.

In Jira, I'm evaluating different approaches:

* Form validation rules
* Automation for Jira
* Custom fields with conditions
* Marketplace apps

My main concerns are:

* Preventing incomplete or invalid date/time combinations
* Providing immediate feedback to users
* Avoiding unnecessary workflow complexity
* Keeping the solution maintainable as requirements evolve

For teams that collect structured user input in Jira, what approach has worked best for you?

I'd be interested in hearing both native Jira solutions and app-based recommendations.

I do work at Adaptavist, but I am not sharing ScriptRunner as an option for that reason. I'm sharing it because I have personally used it on a project for this use case in the past week.

My use case was that I wanted to show in the portal a justification field if the effective date of an employee change (like manager, team, role, department change) was within 10 business days - otherwise I would hide the field.

JSM Behaviors with SR only work if you are using the request form and not putting it on a "form form". Could be a limitation for some users, but what I did is I put those fields on top, and then attached the form with different fields at the bottom.

If it was longer than 10 business days - you see it is hidden

Hi @Ethann Collins ,

Native functionalities won't cover this, as there are no 'dependencies' within Jira Forms (either software/business or service ones).

Without Marketplace apps, automation would probably be sufficient to either:

* Do manual 'fix'/recalculation of dependent fields
* Warn the reporter that something is off when it comes to the entry they submitted

All in all, I'd probably turn to Marketplace and solutions there. Although I have never tested that many of them to be sure which one would work in this case 👀

Btw, I know there's this feature request related to what you're looking for, but it's for JSM forms: JSDCLOUD-10703: Form Validation: Date/Time relative validation (range, +/- x days)

Potentially someone will chime in, but if you do find something that would fulfill this, I'd appreciate it if you could share your findings here.
