Flood of spurious workspaces -- Help!

Question

A new Confluence "feature" appeared a few days ago where the system automatically creates a new personal workspace for every user who accesses the system.  This is an administrative nightmare!  Our workspace directory has doubled in size over the last two days.  Please, tell me this is not really happening!  How can we as site admins reverse or at least suppress this plague?

Indeed I saw this in the release notes blog. Below is the excerpt. I don't know if you can disable this however. I will see if I can find out more information about that.

A personal space in Confluence is a place of your own to jot down new ideas, introduce yourself to your team, keep track of tasks, store important items or files, polish content before sharing with others, and more.

You can choose to leave the space open for others to visit and collaborate, or you can restrict the pages so that no one else can see them.

If you don't already have a personal space, one will be created for you after you've logged in and viewed a page. There are three ways to get to your personal space:

* Select Spaces in the global navigation bar. Your personal space is automatically starred for easy access.
* Select your profile icon at the top right of the global navigation bar and select Personal Space.
* Select Home in the global navigation bar. All starred spaces are shown on the right.

We also have the following feature requests to track our customer interest on the following:

* Ability to disable the personal spaces creation automatically (shared by Jack)
and
* Ability to disable the sample pages created automatically with the personal spaces

Please feel free to post comments and add yourself as a watcher to receive further updates from our product team.

In the meantime, you can delete or archive the spaces individually. If you want to bulk-remove them, you can either write a short script that utilizes Confluence's REST API or use an Atlassian marketplace app like the Confluence Command Line Interface app.
