Throwback Thursday: what were you doing 25 years ago? #TBT

It's Thursday!

giphy

25 year ago (in 2001), the Nokia 3310 was one of the most popular cellphones on the market. The film "Cast Away", starring Tom Hanks, was playing at movie theaters. And Napster was all the rage. CD folders and disc towers were the in thing. Oh, and MP3 players were starting to enter the market like bats flying from under that bridge in Austin, TX. Other movies in 2001 were: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, Monsters, Inc., Ocean's Eleven, Pearl Harbor, and The Mummy Returns.

25 years ago, I had become a dad for the 2nd time 2 months earlier. So I was probably changing a diaper.

Soooo, what were you doing 25 years ago?

Let’s make it a great Thursday!

I was a journalist, covering North America and the global geopolitics issues. George W. Bush was freshly inaugurated so I was probably writing about the early days of the new administration, concepts of NMD, the ABM treaty....

@Kristján Geir Mathiesen I cannot believe that 25 years ago was 2001. My knee hurts, I slept funny so my back hurts, but this post is what made me feel old today.

@Kris Klima _K15t_ now I know where your writing prowess comes from!

25 years ago next week our oldest child was born. It was, and still is, the scariest day of my life. I could not believe how quickly my life, responsibilities and general outlook on everything changed. And yes, I too changed a ton of diapers!

Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

In 2001, I was stuck in a distant country 8,000 km away from home and didn't know if I would ever return—but everything turned out fine in the end.

When you look at it, 25 years is 1 quarter of a century... I'm starting to feel a bit old now... (thanks, no thanks 😆)

Back in 2001, I was still in kindergarten, and I believe I was out of diapers at that point (or at least I hope so lol) 👶

25 years ago, I lived and worked near Cambridge, England.

At this point of the year, I was still getting over a small cold when I left my parents' house in upstate New York that turned into a major illness when I was stuck at JFK airport in New York City for about 30 hours when they closed the airport due to weather. I remember apologizing profusely to the person who had to sit next to me on the flight back to London. I hope he didn't get too sick. Trying to stay awake for the drive home to Cambridge in the middle of the night was sure fun too.

This was before the days when you could work from home (it was before I even used a laptop at work), so no one expected me to work while I was sick. Just a lot of sleeping and watching television (unlike all of you with new babies).

I was a double major college kid at a small liberal arts college, and I was convinced I would be an urbane (and urban) teacher and an actor in musicals and never have a spouse or kids or whatever. We were just starting rehearsals for a mainstage revue that we did instead of a scripted musical that spring, as well as my opera class, private voice and piano, choir, and pom squad. I was reading Sister Carrie and You Can't Go Home Again for my english degree and writing lengthy essays on both for the only college class I ever got less than an A in. (I got a B.)

I am now a mom of 2 grown kids, in the 'burbs, with a crossover in the garage, 2 purse-size dogs, and a truly insane CV that contains no acting, no pedagogy, and a lot of IT.

I was a Junior in High School! I think I had a part-time job at a shoe store in the children's department, my first long relationship, my drivers license and a car, freedom, and mostly time with friends!

I was a developer at a dot com boom company that made software for integrating big, expensive systems. One day I complained about the software tools we were using (CVS, Clearquest, homegrown build system). The person in charge said "well, if you can do better, go for it!". So I did, and that started a career change to become software toolsmith.

And I was changing diapers too :)

My best friend from college and I moved to Arlington, Virginia in late August 2001 with no jobs or place to live (we crashed with another college friend.) His coworker needed subletters for his apartment so we set up a move-in date, and while we waited to move in, I drove to see an old flame in Brooklyn. I got back from NYC in the late hours of September 10th, and we moved into our apartment just off Columbia Pike in Arlington that night, just 3 miles from the Pentagon. I couldn't talk to my parents in Wisconsin for 3 days as the cell phone network was down and we didn't have a landline yet (back when we all had those!)

I was working with a contractor for the US Army Corps of Engineers and managing their real estate system as well as a couple of other systems. Both of our boys had been born by then and were 5 and 3. It was a time of peace and prosperity for us.
