Throwback Thursday: what smell takes you back? #TBT

It's Thursday!

giphy

Rovo just told me that "research indicates that smell is a uniquely powerful trigger for emotional and long-lasting memories, more so than other senses"! There we have it.

And if we want to learn more: "Smell-related memories can persist for a long time, sometimes even decades, and can be recalled with remarkable clarity."

For me, the smell of cherry candy, which was rare in Iceland when I was a kid, brought back memories of my 1978 Christmas trip to California for the longest time. I think it still does. That was such a great trip! Someone gave me a bag of cherry and grape hard candy. Oh boy did I love that cherry smell! I have basically been looking for it ever since...

Soooo, tell us about some "smell memory" (and keep it PG rated) you have from way back.
Let’s make it a great Thursday!

The smell of Fritos corn chips always takes me back to lunch in the cafeteria in 6th grade (10-11 years old). Boys on one side of the table; girls on the other. My mom always put Fritos in our lunch bag when we had a tuna fish sandwich, and I remember my friends thinking I was weird for putting the Fritos in the sandwich before I ate it. (Or maybe my friends thought I was weird all the time—it didn't affect our friendship 😀)

There's a flowering bush like honeysuckle that, every time I smell it, I'm taken back to learning outside in kindergarten. And I love it!

It’s amazing how a single smell can take you back decades in an instant. :D  For me, it’s the smell of freshly baked lavash. Every time I catch that scent, I’m right back in my grandmother’s village :), standing by the tonir as she pulls out warm bread with her bare hands. The air was thick with smoke and laughter, and somehow everything felt peaceful and whole.

Funny how memories live in our senses — one breath, and suddenly you’re home again. :)

My dad's cologne is a strong trigger for memories for me! 🥰

Oh, your comment, @Amanda Barber , just reminded me that my dad used to smoke pipe. But he'd only smoke on the weekends. Very seldom, but once in a blue moon, I am somewhere and smell that particular tobacco. Wow, this takes me back! My father passed away in 1993 so it's been a long while.

I remember the taste of the nougat my grandmother used to make when I was little. It reminds me of wonderful Christmas times with my whole family.

Very seasonal, but we always had a fresh/real fir tree for our Christmas tree. Going into that room in the morning when it was dark and the lights on the tree and the smell of the tree is something I still remember to this day. And when I smell that now, it brings those memories back! And now that I am in Montana and not Dubai, it happens more frequently now haha.
