Throwback Thursday: tent or camper/RV/trailer? #TBT

It's Thursday!

giphy

I am the youngest of my siblings so by the time I was born, my family had gone through the tent phase. My parent's business actually sold tent extensions for camper trailers in Iceland so we had a camper. I am the one sitting looking down.

Sooooo, growing up did you go camping using a tent or a camper/RV/trailer?

Let’s make it a great Thursday!

I'm not from a tent family, that's for sure! :) Not that my parents disliked the idea as such, the problem was ... facilities at the camp sites back in a day and 'noise level self-control', or lack thereof, of some of the dwellers.

But I have really fond memories of tent camping during astronomical 'expeditions' I did as a teen with the local observatory. We'd go to a remote area in north-east Slovakia (really close to Polish and Ukrainian borders) where there'd be an outpost with some storage facilities, set up a tent camp and had fun doing variable stars observations.

The biggest problem was to keep the inside dark and cool, you'd go to bed at 4am and sleep until noon.

Sometimes we'd go out into the field with our sleeping bags to do meteor shower observations. How it worked was that each observer gets a sector of the sky (numbered) and a personal ID number and then you just shout those details followed by the direction and the magnitude of a meteor. So it's like 3-4-North-South-minus 5.

I remember how one early morning (about 8am), a border police patrol turned up asking us if there was any chance it was us camping up in the middle of the field last night. Apparently, someone heard 'suspicious coded messaging' and, being a good citizen in the border zone, came to report it :D

12-15 nerdy kids camping with equally minded adults, doesn't get any better!

My parents were not really outdoorsy people, so we never went camping at all as kids. Our idea of "camping" was 5 of us kids sleeping in my grandma's living room.

I'm a trailer camper.  I do see the attraction of a full RV, but I would need to tow a car, so I'm back to just get a trailer.

While I own a camper I haven't used it in years, in fact I was thinking of selling it.  When camping I like to free style and it's not as possible anymore as campgrounds full up quickly or require reservations. If I have to make reservations I'd rather just stay in hotels.

We never camped when I was little, but I know my uncle goes every year and they have a tent - something like an extension to the car, I believe.

I did camp at festivals, but my current dream is to get a camper and travel around when I'm retired. So, a long road ahead 😄

Growing up we never had a camper. But now that we are in Montana, we are seriously considering getting one.
