Throwback Thursday: stealing/snaging edible things that grow outside? #TBT

It's Thursday!

giphy

As many of you know by now, I grew up in Iceland. Iceland does not have great growing season so what we get there are potatoes, rhubarb, beats, and such. Sometimes as kids, we'd steal a couple of stalks of rhubarb from someone's garden... After moving to America and finally buying a house, my wife and I wanted to plant some "Icelandic vegetables". Among them, we planted rhubarb. Our rhubarb has already started growing this year and couple of weeks ago, our grandson was visiting. I gave him some :)

He really did like it! Chomping down on it. Soooo, what kinds of fruits or vegetables or whatnaught outside food did you "steal"/snag and eat as a kid?
Let’s make it a great Thursday!

Chives

Since they have hollow leaves we used to pick them and try and use them as straws before eating them.  Later, as a mid-teenager, one of my friends used to pick them and then try to look 'cool' by pretending to smoke them, although nowadays there is a very different view on whether smoking is 'cool'!

I loved hotdogs as a kid! I used to sneak them out of the fridge when my mom was in another room. One day, I found one in the back of the fridge and dug in -- till my mom walked in, grabbed it out of my hands, and rushed me to the hospital for food poisoning (yeah, it was a little green). But I still enjoy a good hotdog, I just check it now before eating it. ☺️

When I was small, there was a crab apple tree in our backyard (or perhaps it was actually in the backyard of the house behind us—there were no fences in our neighborhood). We used to nick the apples that fell from the tree, since we were too small to pick them from the branches.

My granddaughter loves to sneak tomatoes from my plants. I planted several cherry tomatoes this year to make it easier for her to pick and eat right off the vine.

Mainly blueberries and blackberries.  The woods behind the house was full of them.

Hi

What wonderful memories! When I was little, my grandmother and I would go get water from the fountain, and we would steal the occasional apple from her neighbors because it was one of my grandmother's favorite fruits.

I love this post; thanks for sharing it.

Regards

Oooh, that's a good one!

We have a lot of edibles in Bulgaria, many fruits and veggies. A very common thing to "steal" from the yards was cherries, plums, apples, walnuts, and even corn cobs from the fields :D

At the time, the produce was so rich that usually, no one was mad at us for picking fruit from their trees.

I remember that, while we used to go to our cottage, I would go around and climb trees, mostly cherry 🍒 ones, and then would eat those 😄

When I was about 10, I used to walk from my dad’s village to my mum’s village—my grandparents' house—which took around 45 minutes on foot, mostly climbing through mountain paths and forests. Along the way, there were plenty of fruit trees, and I couldn’t resist grabbing a few apples or peas here and there to snack on as I went.

One day, I was walking the same route with my mum and told her, “Mum, this apple is amazing!” She immediately realised what I’d been up to and took me straight to the house of the tree owners on our way to apologise. I remember saying, “I’m sorry I ate some of your apples and peas without your consent”. But instead of getting angry, they welcomed me warmly and told me I was always welcome to take some whenever I passed by. ❤️

I still love finding the random blackberry bushes outside and enjoying some ripe, delicious blackberries.  Also used to steal plums from a neighbor's plum tree when I was little.  😋

Well, having a garden with strawberries at the time was a temptation that one couldn't resist.  Of course it came with a bit of a lecture when mom went out to pick them and came back in with a small bowl... but hey, they were tasty.

The raspberries were the same way.  That was a little more obvious that little hands have been picking as the stems were still there.

It was worth it.
