Throwback Thursday: memories with your mama? #TBT

It's Thursday!

Last January, I flew back home to Iceland to celebrate my mom's 90th birthday. I am the youngest of five siblings. My dad passed away 33 years ago so she has been on her own for that long. I try to visit once a year. It was great being able to be with her on her birthday. All of her kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids were there except my kids. Fun party.

Here is a picture from when I was 3 years old or so. My mom helping me brush my teeth.

 What a lovely photo, Kristján, and happy belated 90th to your mom. Making it to her birthday with almost the whole family there sounds like a very good day.

My memories are mostly her behind a camera, and afternoons in the garden with my grandparents. But two stand out, and they belong together.

The first is learning to ride a bike in our backyard. She held the saddle again and again, ran along beside me, picked me up when it went wrong, and set me up to succeed until I suddenly did not need her hand anymore.

The second is the mirror image, about 20 years later. She had not driven a car in roughly two decades and only ever sat shotgun. So I drove her to an empty public parking lot with her little Smart and we practiced: parking, turning, starting on a slope, all of it. This time I was the one holding the saddle.

She did really well. No accidents, and not long after she was seen driving through town, maybe a bit too quickly, on her way to work at the pharmacy. She is still around and still driving today.

Funny how that works out. First she teaches you, then you get to give it back.

My mom would always be up for a game of cribbage.  Didn't matter which age, she's always be there to play a few games. I'm pretty sure she didn't let me win, but I'll never know for sure.

I was homeschooled for a good portion of my early years.

She was teaching me accounting in high school - she holds a Doctoraite in accounting - its her world in a big way.

I was off 5 cents.

I put a nickle on the table - she gibbs slapped me.

She still laughs today when I mention this.

I live under her roof and help take care of things.

She also listens to my rants on all things Atlassian from work and etc.

And I listen to her rants on Accounting.
