Throwback Thursday: idioms that have helped you? #TBT

It's Thursday!

Thor was 67 years old when our paths crossed. I didn't know him from Adam but we both had Icelandic roots in common. I associated with him for 28 years, until his death at age 95.  He was always very kind and encouraging to me. He would gently ask deep questions that got me to scratch deeper and turn over a lot more rocks. The biggest help he gave me were words he said to my mother, when she came to the states to visit us when I was still in college (this was only a few months after I got to know Thor). My mom told me later what Thor had told her. And what he told her were simple words: you don't have to worry about this one. It is amazing how few words, not even told to us, can instill hope, reassurance, and confidence in us. My mom believed Thor and her faith in his words and also given me hope for the future. Words can be very powerful.

My wife and I are no millionaires but so far in life things have worked out for us and we have always had enough to eat and a warm shelter.

I really like "Done is better than perfect" 😄

I can sometimes have a tendency to overthink or keep polishing things, so this one is a useful reminder for both and me and my team that progress usually matters more than perfection.

It has probably saved me quite a few unnecessary hours over the years!

Similar to you meeting Thor, I had met John when I started my job. He would come by and offer deep, thoughtful advice. One thing that stayed with me was "When you don't know where you are going, any road will take you". I have said this to new members in my team and to my kids.

Such a lovely thread @Kristján Geir Mathiesen I really enjoyed the story about Thor; it’s amazing how a few words from the right person, at the right moment, can stay with us for years.

One I come back to quite often is “Perfect is the enemy of good.” It’s a nice reminder to keep moving, especially when you’re tempted to overthink every little detail.

And I have to say, reading everyone else’s sayings here is almost as good as collecting tiny pieces of life advice. Great #TBT!

I like "Comparison is the thief of joy" and "Memento mori".  Not long ago, I watched a clip of John Cena on Jimmy Kimmel Live where he (John) explained the second watch that he carries. One that tells perspective, not time. The idea is that when feeling insecure or not enough, remember that "Comparison is the thief of joy" and that you are enough and worthy. On the other side, when the ego is too big, "Memento mori" is a reminder that you are above no one and we all meet the same fate.

Great thread! I can't recall who shared this: "We’re only as old as we feel!"
For me, it means our inner energy and attitude matter more than our calendar. It's never too late to start over or kick off something big.
