Throwback Thursday: favorite summer treat? #TBT

It's Thursday!

giphy
Okay, we are in the middle of the summer heat, at least in the northern hemisphere. Hot and sticky in some places. Hot and dry in other places.

Soooo, what was your favorite summer treat when you were growing up?

Let’s make it a great Thursday!

Erdbeereis am Stiel / Strawberry ice cream on a stick made by my grandma.

The real secret wasn't just the recipe; it was the strawberries: carefully picked from her own garden and turned into delightful treats all within the same hour. Anything bought from a store might have tasted like a strawberry-flavored idea, but hers truly tasted like the fresh, vibrant field itself.

The waiting in front of the freezer was the worst and best part of every summer.

@Kristján Geir Mathiesen, what was yours? The Jell-O from the picture?

Not exactly a childhood treat, but every summer reminds me that the only coffee I truly enjoy is an ice-cold coffee glacé. ☀️

My favorite summer treat is ...

...a day with temperature under 25C during day and under 15 in the night :)

Indian summers are incomplete without mangoes, kulfi, aam panna, lassi, kala khatta gola, sugarcane juice, coconut water, falooda, mango shakes, and chaas. My top picks are aam panna, sugarcane juice, and mangoes.

Honestly, it's impossible to say no to a delicious mango! 🥭❤️😄

My favorite summer treat has always been a cold beer and to top it off -> possibly on the beach with a great view of the seaside :)

Fresh Estonian strawberries and blueberries 🫐🍓 Simple, but still my favorite summer treat.

Having an chocolate covered ice cream bar always brings me back to childhood. At the corner store the ice bars were all individually wrapped, so we could grab one on a hot summer day.

Pancake layer cake with grilled watermelon sitting on a balcony overlooking the bush, a mangrove swamp, olive groves or the ocean depending on who's house we were at.

The Pancakes were cooked on a hot plate over a BBQ next to the grilling watermelon slices.  They were then stacked up using a thin layer of Nutella to hold them together, then cream was poured over the stack with fresh chilled strawberries placed on top.

As a child, I loved push ups! (Definitely not the exercise, lol!) I'm sure they weren't even that great, but the delivery method was fun and they were sherbet instead of ice cream!

The Ice Cream Truck: Push-Up Pops

Now, I'd say watermelon is my favorite with soft serve ice cream in a close second!

In the summers in upstate New York, the ice cream stands were/are open. When I was a kid, these places served only soft ice cream; you had a choice of vanilla, chocolate, or a twist of both. I was chocolate all the way. For me, good soft-serve ice cream will always say summer, even though we have a place here in Florida that's open all year round.

Schwan's Orange Push-Ems were the best! Every other Wednesday night, the yellow truck pulled up in front of our house, and we got fish fliets, chicken tenders, frozen veggies, and orange Push-Ems.

My fav summer treat is anything frozen preferably in a cocktail form such as a Pina Colada on a beach somewhere. Or even by a pool. Just a refreshing frozen cocktail while sitting in some amazing place with beautiful scenery.

Every August, we'd drive from Michigan to the Outer Banks, NC where my grandparents had an oceanfront cottage. We'd spend a week in the sun and sand and humidity, no air conditioning or television. My favorite summer treats were the sound of the ocean all day and night, the smell of sea air, the outdoor showers, and the fresh watermelon that my granddad would slice on the beach (we'd carry the official 'watermelon table' down to the beach one evening towards the end of our visit).

Leading up to the watermelon, our other sweet treat was ice cream (often butter pecan) with fresh peaches on top. But only after we finished our dinner.

Nothing like some cool watermelon!  Freshly cut is great, but lately I've also been mixing pieces with some feta cheese and sliced olives just to get a different flavor.

If I am still going for the fresh pieces, I'll sprinkle on some Tahin if it's available just to give it a little kick.

Love this topic @Kristján Geir Mathiesen 😍

Omg Anahit Sukiasyan this brings back such nostalgia! Back in India, we used to visit CCD (Café Coffee Day) where they served something very similar — their Café Frappé ☕ tastes amazing and I miss it here in USA!

My summer treat is Indian mangoes like Kesar, Alphanso, Rasalu and so many more varieties. 🥭❤️ Oh and another one is mishti doi (aka sweet steamed/baked yogurt) which is a Bengali cuisine special and very close to cheesecake. 🍨

Oh, the orange creamsicles!

We also had and have these in Iceland:

The green one tastes like green Hlunkur! Hahahaha, that's what folk (us) say. And they used to be much bigger and thicker. Stupid shrinkflation...

It's hot and full of mosquitoes here 🫠🦟

As for summer treats... I don't know if I had any particular one, but I remember always craving and asking for that ice cream sandwich 🥪 (even though there were many tastier things)

Uhh, @Tomislav Tobijas  Mosquitos are no fun.

Did you know that only last year, Iceland officially lost its status as one of the world's few mosquito-free zones when scientists confirmed the presence of the cold-resistant Culiseta annulata mosquito?

We didn't have any there all my time growing up and living there!

Definitely Ice Popsicles! 🍭 Because nothing beats fruity flavors on a hot day 🍓🫐🍊… and let's be real, the real flex is that rainbow tongue afterward. 😛🌈 Show it off proudly!

Can't enjoy summer without fruit like watermelon and peaches, and ice cream. My favorite ice cream flavor is moose tracks! Moose tracks contains fudge and peanut butter cups in a vanilla base.

@Tomislav Tobijas , a simple ice cream sandwich on a hot summer day is hard to beat. A close competitor for me was always a fudgsicle from the corner store. Those childhood decisions were so difficult to make! Fortunately, the store was a short walk away from our house so we visited frequently during the holidays.

@Kristján Geir Mathiesen , I'm so sad to hear that Iceland has lost its status as mosquito-free! I remember thinking that with a name like Mývatn, I would be eaten alive. But when I got there, despite the cloud of flies buzzing around my head and in my ears, not one bite to be had! Very much the opposite of here in British Columbia where you might see one bug and end up with 15 swollen itchy bites!
