Throwback Thursday: A hobby you loved as a kid #TBT

It's Thursday!

giphy

When I was growing up, we played outside a lot. I remember that the street/area below my house was not paved. We used to "Country Paris" (I don't have a clue what it is called in English). We would draw a circle in the gravel with a stick. Here is a description of the game in Icelandic (you can use Google translate to translate). This AI generated picture does not quite represent the game but...

Soooo, what was a hobby or activity you absolutely loved when you were younger? Do you still do it today—or miss it?

Let’s make it a great Thursday!

What a beautiful memory, @Kristján Geir Mathiesen

Your story instantly took me back to my own childhood. We also spent a lot of time outside. One game I absolutely loved was jumping rope with friends for hours. We would create little competitions, invent rhymes, and somehow never get tired.

I don’t do it anymore that much, but I truly miss that carefree feeling, when time didn’t matter and the only goal was to have fun.

Thank you for the nostalgic moment! ✨

We did a lot of jumping rope also, @Anahit Sukiasyan, though that was just the girls. I think that boys in the 1970s would ridicule other boys if they tried it.

As a group, though, we would play hide-and-seek using 4 or more yards. Only a few neighbors with big dogs had fences in their yards; even the few with pools just had a fence around the pool, so we could pretty much run around the entire neighborhood of 180 houses.

In general the activity was just playing outside. Might be some type of sport or playing tag or riding bicycles. Inside for me would be putting together model cars.

As a young boy, I enjoyed spending time with the Boy Scouts - being outdoors, canoeing, camping weekends, and discovering a love for fishing with other friends.

Besides playing outside we had a variety of arts & crafts hobbies that we enjoyed. We painted ceramics (mugs, figurines, etc.), created macrame plant hangers and wall hangings, crocheting blankets, and something called tri-chem fabric painting.

I collected tea cards and cigarette cards. Little cardboard rectangles with text and pictures that came in some kinds of tea and in boxes of cigarettes. I liked sorting them into piles and reading the info on them. Lots of times if a topic comes up in conversation, I still see the picture on a card in my mind.

I also liked remembering facts from the Guinness Book of Records and telling my relatives (and anyone else) about the various topics. When I meet children that do this kind of thing, it makes me smile in understanding. My family still don't think it counts as a conversation, however.

Anybody remember this 😅

Croatian word for this is "školica" (like a small/mini school), while in English it's hopscotch, I believe.

Beautiful AI-generated picture @Kristján Geir Mathiesen

One of my hobbies as a kid was re-enacting movies and tv series with my Matchbox cars

After seeing "Convoy" I was really into trucks, semis and trailers:

We lived in a extended family with 6 kids across 3 families. It was a routine that started with Cricket around 5PM. It was followed by a game of cards in the evening. Dinner was chaotic (yet fun) amongst so many people. We would end the night on the terrace. I remember we could see the stars back then (air pollution has ruined this for us now).

My elder brother used to scare us with horror stories on the terrace! Some of us got scared everyday and would swear to skip the stories next day... but kids being kids, we eagerly waited for the stories the following day as well.
